MTRCB suspends Tulfo brothers’ show

MANILA (Updated) — The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) suspended for 20 days beginning Thursday, May 10, a public service program hosted by brothers of journalist Ramon Tulfo.
The suspension order against “T3: Kapatid, Sagot Kita,” hosted by Ben, Raffy and Erwin Tulfo, came after the three made threats against showbiz couple Raymart Santiago and Claudine Barretto whom their older brother, Ramon, had an altercation with last May 6.
Ramon and the celebrity couple figured in a fight last Sunday at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 when Santiago allegedly tried to grab Tulfo’s phone, which contained a photograph of Barretto berating the ground crew of Cebu Pacific Air over her lost luggage.
Tulfo said he took the photograph after he heard the actress uttered harsh words to the airline staff and threatened to have them fired. He said in his complaint that he was mauled by the couple and their companion.
His three brothers then made threats against the Santiago couple on air, through their program “T3” on TV5.
This action, according to the MTRCB, violates a section of Presidential Decree 1986, which states, “airing scenes and utterances that are indecent and contrary to law, or with a dangerous tendency to encourage the commission of violence, or of a wrong or crime.”
Presidential Decree 1986 is the law that created the MTRCB in 1985.
The Board also set a hearing on Monday, May 14, to further discuss the actions made by the program hosts.
But TV5 said in a statement that MTRCB overstepped its authority for coming out with a decision that could possibly “threaten the independence and freedom of the broadcast industry.”
“The Tulfos have been sanctioned. What else is there for government to resolve? A preventive suspension suggests that the continued broadcast of the program would constitute a danger to the viewing public,” the network said.
TV5 management had slapped a three-day suspension on the Tulfo brothers. The suspension ends today, Friday.
The network said, however, that “T3” was conceptualized, produced, and ultimately classified as news and public service program.
“For MTRCB to even consider or suggest by its actions that ‘T3’ has suddenly lost all its purpose and value, or worse, poses a danger to the public such that it warrants censorship, sets a dangerous tone and could potentially lead to a dangerous precedent for all news programs,” the company said.
