Natamycin found in wines from Argentina and South Africa (Feb 28, 2010)

Clark Wine Center is pleased to relay interesting news and articles about wine to you on this web site.  We hope that this will enhance your wine shopping experience when you visit this wine shop in Pampanga Clark Freeport Zone.

German laboratories recently found traces of natamycin in wines from Argentina and South Africa. Natamycin is an antifungal substance used in the making of certain cheeses and sausages and is not dangerous for human health. However, when it comes to wine, the presence of natamycin is forbidden by European rules.

The Argentine authorities have decided to examine the presence of natamycin in wine intended for the Dutch market . If the substance is found, the wine will not be exported. This can lead to delays in deliveries but the analysis will be comprised in the VI 1 document and the Dutch commision for food and customer health (VWA) will put natamycin into its control trials as of July 1rst. To avoid potential problems in the Netherlands it is important that operators keep the certificate of analysis so as to show it on request.

Meanwhile, other customers of Argentinian wines outside of the EU have moved into action : the Korea Food and Drug Administration has banned the sales and distribution of ten Argentinian and South-African wines as they were tested positive to natamycin. Customs control are being reinforced, with Argentinian and South-African wines being tested systematically, while wines from other destination are only submitted to testing if they are red and being imported into the country for the first time.
