New Zealand: the harvest down compared to the last two vintages (Apr 23, 2010)

Clark Wine Center is pleased to relay interesting news and articles about wine to you on this web site.  We hope that this will enhance your wine shopping experience when you visit this wine shop in Pampanga Clark Freeport Zone.

The New Zealand Winegrowers Association has confirmed that a wine harvest of between 265,000 and 285,000 tons of grapes is expected, which in any event will be below that of the 2009 and 2008 harvests, each 285,000 tons. This decline in wine production comes despite an increase in the vineyard area by 2,000 hectares to 33,000 hectares in 2009-2010.

Philip Gregan, CEO of the New Zealand Winegrowers Association, is not surprised: “The challenging global environment in which New Zealand wines are being marketed and sold, means producers will continue to focus on the key element in New Zealand wines’ export success of the past two decades – producing world class grapes and wines. The prospect of a slightly reduced vintage, despite a further increase in the wine producing area, testifies to that quality focus”.

The harvest began in late February in the northernmost vineyards: “In some wine regions the harvest seems to be running a week or two later than last year “indicated Phil Gregan, “but the prospects for the vintage are looking good. The key for a successful harvest will be the weather over the next two months.”
