NIA to reconstruct Bulacan’s Bulu Dam

MANILA, Philippines – The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) will reconstruct a collapsed dam in Bulacan blamed for the flooding of several towns in the onslaught of typhoon “Pedring” last year.
Other than the reconstruction of Bulu Dam, the NIA’s Regional Irrigation Management–Central Luzon under engineer Reynaldo Puno will implement more than P120 million worth of irrigation projects this year in Pampanga.
It is also undertaking the repair of existing irrigation systems.
NIA Administrator Antonio Nangel said among the projects included in the P120-million fund are the irrigation project in Bacolor town costing P92.15 million; improvement of the SIPPAMA pump irrigation, P9.215 million; and improvement of the TEOBACU-IA irrigation canal facilities, P18.43 million, both in San Luis town.
Nangel has directed Puno to conduct a feasibility study on the reconstruction of Bulu Dam, which irrigates some 1,300 hectares of cash crops and palay in San Miguel town.
The decision to reconstruct the dam, built by the Department of Public Works and Highways for flood control, was reached in a recent meeting of NIA officials with Bulacan officials led by Gov. Wilhelmino Sy Alvarado.
Nangel and Puno said the Bulu Dam reconstruction would cost P400 million to P500 million.
The feasibility study, they said, will be completed by July and the detailed engineering before yearend. They have yet to determine the source of funding.
At the height of “Pedring” late last year, the Bulu Dam collapsed and the water rushed downstream, mixing with floodwaters from the swollen Pampanga River and inundating Candaba, Calumpit and nearby towns for several weeks.
