No date set yet for Aquino’s visit to China
April 1, 2011
NO DEFINITE date has been set for President Benigno Aquino III’s visit to China.
The President himself bared this Thursday after he attended the load-out ceremony at AG&P Heavy Fabrication Yard in Bauan, Batangas.
“There is an invitation, but have not finalized the details. There are a lot of things that has to be worked out,” Aquino said.
Chinese President Hu Jintao formally invited Aquino during last year’s Leaders Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in the United States.
Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Liu Jianchao recently said Aquino’s visit was tentatively scheduled sometime in May.
Relations between the Philippines and China remain normal, high-ranking officials of both countries insisted even after Beijing executed three Filipinos convicted of drug trafficking despite Manila’s last-minute appeals for clemency.
Filipino drug smuggling convicts Ramon Credo, 42; Sally Ordinario-Villanueva, 32; and Elizabeth Batain, 38; were executed though lethal injection for smuggling more than 4,000 grams of heroin.
Aquino appealed for understanding on China’s decision, noting that the three Filipinos were subjected to Chinese laws and rules.
He asked the public not to allow the executions affect bilateral relations between the Philippine and China.
Recently, the Philippines also protested the reported “harassment” of two Chinese patrol boats against a Philippine oil exploration vessel on the Reed Bank, near the disputed Spratly Islands. Reed Bank is a territory claimed by the Philippines.
Aquino sought an explanation from the Chinese government but the latter has yet to issue an apology regarding what happened.
The two countries diplomatic ties were also strained by the August 23 botched hostage crisis where eight Hong Kong tourists were killed in Manila. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
