No dengue outbreak in Mabalacat: officials

MABALACAT — Officials here denied reports that there is an outbreak of dengue virus in the locality, after numerous cases were reported to the local health office, particularly in Barangay Dau, Northville 16 Resettlement in Barangay Tabun, and other parts of this first-class town.
Councilor Oscar Aurelio, a physician and chair of the Municipal Council committee on health, admitted that dengue cases have increased over the past few months but said this has not reached an alarming stage yet.
“Merakal la mu reng cases uling memanuran, pero ala na man outbreak (Cases have increased because of the rains but there is no outbreak),” Aurelio said.
According to him, the rural health units were already advised to conduct information drive and preventive fumigation in order to avert the spread of the dreaded virus.
The local government has also intensified campaigns like cleanliness drive and symposia to rid the town of dengue, said Aurelio.
The official said schools and other wide areas that may become breeding grounds of mosquitoes should be cleaned and cleared.
He also cited the 4s campaign of the Department of Health (DOH) that include: search and destroy breeding grounds of mosquitoes, seek immediate consultation if symptoms manifest, self-protection measures like wearing of long-sleeved shirts, and saying no to indiscriminate fogging operations.
The Rotary Club of Mabalacat Clark (RCMC), in response to the request of the people in Northville 16, Atlubola, Mabalacat, also accomplished a Dengue Awareness Prevention Forum last July 13.
Aurelio, charter president of RCMC, said there are four confirmed cases of dengue fever at said resettlement site.
“We conducted the lecture/forum to provide information on how to prevent the spread of the dreaded disease and allay the fears of the people,” Aurelio said.
The activity was done in coordination with the Multi-Sectoral Alliance of Mabalacat, Samahang Bisaya ng Mabalacat, Northville 16 Homeowners Association and Atlubola Barangay Council, said the official.
“Many people attended the forum, including Mayor Boking Morales of the municipality,” Aurelio said.
The RCMC is also set to conduct similar forums in all affected communities for the next several weeks, he added.
In a latest report of the DOH in Central Luzon, Pampanga ranked third among provinces in the region with most number of cases from January to July this year.
Dengue cases in the province are about 1,000 or 20 percent of the more than 5,000 cases in Central Luzon and out of these cases, there were already 20 deaths.
