Riesling – Germany’s Finest Grape
About Riesling
Known as Germany’s finest grape, Riesling has a rich and delicious history. Originating in the Rhine region of Germany in the 15th century, the Riesling grape is considered to be among the top three white wine varieties and also one of the 20 most widely-grown grapes in the world.
It is debated as to how Riesling came to be, but many believe that the Romans brought the Gouais Blanc grape to Germany where it was blended with the Traminer grape and local wild vines. This interesting hybrid of wild and domesticated vines created the unique character of the Riesling grape.
One of the most special qualities of Riesling is its longevity. Its high acidity allows for extended aging. In fact, there are Riesling wines that have been pleasing even after 100 years! In addition to aging well, this wine is also famous for its versatility with food. Although it’s acidic, Riesling is also sweet, allowing it to stand up to strong flavors in Thai, Chinese and saltier dishes. Riesling is generally paired with pork and fish, but remains popular for its flexibility and versatility.
Riesling’s unique taste and character have inspired many other countries to grow this grape variety. This medium to full-bodied wine is delicious by itself and will complement almost any food whether it is enjoyed today or twenty years from today.
