Palace defends Pacquiao victory

Monday, November 14, 2011
MALACAÑANG extended on Monday its full support to Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao amid doubts about his victory over Mexican fighter Juan Manuel Marquez last Sunday in Las Vegas.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said for the Palace and President Benigno Aquino III, there is no question that Pacquiao had won the fight.
“We are very happy… Whether you win by an inch or a mile, you still won. He is the winner,” she said.
Valte said the Aquino administration will always be supportive of Pacquiao and of any other Filipino athlete “whether they win or lose.”
“It is not easy to raise our flag in sports like boxing that’s why we always say that win or lose, we will support our athletes,” she said.
Valte could not confirm if there is a scheduled courtesy call of Pacquiao with the President.
Pacquiao won his trilogy fight against Marquez by a controversial majority decision.
The Saranggani Representative was able to retain his World Boxing Organization welterweight crown but due to a very close fight and his apparent “poor” performance, some boxing fans and analysts questioned his victory even believing that the decision should have been a draw or Marquez should have won.
Even Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach admitted that he is not satisfied with Pacquiao’s performance and said that Marquez deserves a fourth fight.
Pacquiao, in a television interview, said he is eyeing a match with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May 2012 but he is also not closing his doors for a fourth match with Marquez.
The judges scored the fight 114-114, 115-113 and 116-112, in favor of Pacquiao.
All three fights of Pacquiao with Marquez ended in a close decision. The two fought for the first time in May 2004 that ended in a draw. They had a rematch in 2008, when Pacquiao won via a split decision.
Marquez persistently bragged that he defeated the Filipino pound-for-pound boxer during their first two fights. He even went to the Philippines to personally challenge Pacquiao for a third match.
President Aquino, while in Honolulu, Hawaii, for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Summit, congratulated Pacquiao for his recent victory.
He thanked the boxing champ for bringing honor to the country and making all Filipinos proud again. He also wished for the immediate recovery of Pacquiao’s strength.
In the House of Representatives, colleagues of the fighting congressman from Saranggani province believed Pacquiao had won in Sunday’s showdown in Las Vegas.
Zambales Representative Mitos Magsaysay said that detractors should stop criticizing the boxing champion for his performance saying that Pacquiao has the numbers to back up his victory and that the public should just back off and cut him some slack.
“Give him a break. His performance in the ring in his last match may not have been as explosive as his earlier victories but Manny must have a game plan set for the match, which they did not want to make public,” she said.
Magsaysay said that the “uncommon” performance by Pacquiao should not dampen the public’s views of the boxing champ because the Filipino boxer has already proven his mettle in the sport.
“When the crowd was booing him, I knew Manny took it to heart. He wants fight fans to always be satisfied and get their money’s worth. Their leaving with questions on the credibility of his victory will not sit well with Manny. But like any other person, Manny is also allowed to have off days, and I am sure that as soon as he regroups, he will work hard to further improve his game and bring new honor to the country,” she added.
Ang Kasangga party-list Representative Teodorico Haresco also told doubters to “leave Manny Pacquiao alone” after judges have unanimously declared him a winner.
“Crab mentality has reared its ugly head. Everybody who was not in the ring had a lot to say. Some even suggest a rematch. When the dust settled and the score cards made public, it showed that our champion had won. Let’s respect that decision,” he said in a text message.
Eastern Samar Representative Ben Evardone said Pacquiao still delivered a convincing victory against Marquez.
“Marquez has no power. And Manny’s stamina was without doubt. Whereas, Marquez struggled. Manny’s victory proved his greatness. He is really a Filipino icon,” he said.
Parañaque Representative Roilo Golez echoed the sentiment of his colleagues, saying Marquez did not have the power “to carry the right to the champ.”0
“In pro boxing, aggressiveness scores points. Marquez was on the defensive, backpedalling all of the time, but admittedly scored good points counterpunching,” he said.
Meanwhile, Malacañang congratulated the Filipino athletes who won medals in the 26th Southeast Asian Games currently being held in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia.
“We have won 15 medals based on our tally. From what I understand, six of the 15 medals are gold but this may be outdated information. But we would like to extend our congratulations to our athletes,” deputy spokesman Valte said. (Jill Beltran/Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
