Palace downplays coup rumors

MANILA — Malacañang shrugged off on Tuesday the coup rumors against President Benigno Aquino III.
Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, in a news briefing, believe that the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is a professional organization and the administration has been addressing the concerns and welfare of the military as well as the police personnel.
“We are not bothered by any rumors of a coup. It will abide by the commander-in-chief,” he said, citing that the AFP leadership has already issued a statement denying the rumors.
He added that those coup rumors could just be “noise.”
“How can it be successful—assuming, for the sake of argument, if there is one—when the President has launched his several programs for the benefit of the soldiers and the policemen?,” he said.
He cited the housing programs that the government has been implementing for the men in uniform, as well as the increased combat pay and essential equipment for them.
“So all these programs necessary to ensure the benefits of those who are protecting and serving us are being ensured by the President in his various programs towards the AFP and the PNP (Philippine National Police),” he said.
Senator Antonio Trillanes IV has raised the issue on coup attempt against Aquino.
He has said that some retired military officers were trying to recruit the active military personnel to oust the President.
But he said the move to recruit failed.
“The retired military officers have forgotten that this is already a professional organization. This is no longer the organization that they were used to,” he said.
Lacierda, however, said that Malacanang will not ask Trillanes to shut up.
“We will leave it with him to speak about these things. As a senator, we cannot impose on the good senator,” he said.
