Palace: No violation of human rights during Cory’s term

MALACANANG dismissed Monday accusations of Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., who said that the administration of President Benigno Aquino III’s mother, Corazon, was also marked by human rights violations.
Marcos made these remarks on his Facebook page, scoring presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, who said that former President Marcos still failed to apologize for the human rights violations that took place under the Martial Law years.
The younger Marcos said the administration only used the Marcoses’ failure to apologize to human rights victims as its justification to prevent the burial of his father at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
Bongbong then turned the tables on President Aquino’s mother, saying that human rights violations also took place during her term, including the Mendiola and the Hacienda Luisita massacre.
But Lacierda said President Cory Aquino and other officials were cleared in the Mendiola massacre.
“The issues that Senator Marcos has raised are primarily issues that have been raised during the campaign so those are old broken records,” he added.
The Palace official also dismissed Bongbong’s claims regarding Cory’s supposed request from the United States government to bomb the airbase controlled by Reform the Armed Forces of Movement (RAM) soldiers during the attempted coup against her.
RAM was an organization of officers of the Armed Forces who launched a series of coup attempts during the Cory presidency.
“He can go back to history and investigate that,” said Lacierda.
For Malacanang, Bongbong’s statements are just meant to get back at President Aquino over his decision denying a state honor for the burial of the late dictator.
“It is very clear the facts speak for themselves. There’s a judgment against the Marcoses in a foreign court. There had been an outcry of human rights violations. These things have not been resolved until the present time and so I think there is a deliberate diversion of issues by Senator Bongbong Marcos,” Lacierda said.
Asked if the Palace is disappointed with how the Marcos family is treating the issue, he said: “We would understand the position of Senator Bongbong Marcos. Obviously, there’s a lot of hero worship going on and that’s understandable. He worships his father and we perfectly understand the situation where the Marcoses are coming.”
Aquino decided to withhold full military honors for the late strongman, noting that many victims of human rights violations during the Martial Law years have yet to be given proper compensation and apology.
