Palace not 100% sure of Corona’s conviction

MALACAÑANG admitted Friday the possibility of an acquittal for Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Renato Corona in the forthcoming impeachment trial in the Senate.
“That’s (acquittal) a possibility kaya hindi kami sarado doon sa ganoong klaseng possibility pero confident kami na ma-i-impeach si Corona. Pero of course, ‘yung confidence is different doon sa kasiguraduhan,” Presidential Political Adviser Ronald Llamas said.
Contrary to the earlier statement of deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte, Llamas said the Palace officials have yet to discuss contingency plans if ever Corona is acquitted.
He said Malacanang officials are focused on the impeachment trial, which is set to start on January 16.
At a press briefing last Thursday, Valte said a contingency plan is being prepared if ever Corona will be acquitted but she refused to give details about it.
She made the remarks in light of the criticisms of SC spokesman Midas Marquez calling the Palace as arrogant and presumptuous in scouting possible replacements for Corona even though his post is not yet vacant.
Valte insisted that preparing for a contingency plan is not an act of arrogance.
But Llamas, while admitting the impeachment process is a numbers game, said the administration is not yet sure to get enough number of votes from the senators to convict Corona.
“Ang tingin ko sa ngayon, bukas pa yung (numbers), hindi namin ipre-prejudge ‘yung magiging desisyon nung mga senador,” he said.
He noted that the decision of the senators will depend on the evidence presented in the trial, as well as the pulse of the people and the senators’ respective political ambition in 2013 elections.
“The impeachment process is both a legal and political process,” he stressed. “What will be dominant are the eight articles of impeachment. But of course, they will also look into consideration the pulse of the people, their party affiliations, party loyalties, and their political future.”
Malacanang has been hoping for the senators to be fair during the trial, expecting that the impeachment court would decide based on the evidence that will be presented.
The prosecutors need 16 votes, or two-thirds of the 23 senators, to impeach Corona and eight votes to acquit him.
Of the 23 senators, four are members of the administration’s Liberal Party, namely Senators Franklin Drilon, Ralph Recto, Teofisto Guingona III and Francis Pangilinan. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
