PamCham bent to boost countryside economy

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Members of the Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (PamCham) tourism committee have agreed to organize and support tour packages that will showcase Pampanga as a tourist destination.
The agreement was made during the group’s meeting Wednesday, when tourism committee director Malou Garbes of MBG Realty and chairperson Abby Tuazon of Lakeshore, along with members Mark Navarro, Cherry Tan of Apag Marangle Restaurant and Ana Marie Castro of Castro’s Travel Solutions, committed to put together an itinerary for an initial rolling tour of existing and potential tour sites in Pampanga.
The objective of the committee is to stimulate economic activities in the countryside by capitalizing initially on the culinary ingenuity of Kapampangans and subsequently showcasing local festivals and other potential eco-tourism sites and locations in the countryside.
PamCham president Jim Jimenez supported the committee’s plans. He said PamCham will suggest a tour itinerary template to the provincial tourism office that will highlight the local festivals, activities and sites of the province.
“The chamber hopes that a coordinated tourism promotion in all cities and municipalities in Pampanga will be instigated and sustained to successfully present Pampanga as a definitive tourist destination and not just a gateway or stopover to North Luzon,” Jimenez said.
PamCham will also promote immersion tourism that will enjoin tourists to participate hands-on in home-grown activities like rice planting in Sta. Rita or Magalang, lantern making in San Fernando, pottery making in Sto. Tomas, casket making in Minalin, furniture making in Betis, and other cultural activity or event indigenous in the city or municipality they visit.
The tourism committee of PamCham hopes that parallel efforts from both the private and public sector will convince our local entrepreneurs and government leaders to seriously consider tourism promotion as an effective strategy towards MSME development, which will ultimately lead to sustainable economic growth in the countryside.
