Pampanga drivers, operators to join transport strike

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Jeepney drivers and operators from two cities and several towns in Pampanga are set to participate in the nationwide transport strike against rising oil prices on March 31.
Members of the transport sector from cities of San Fernando and Angeles, including representatives from towns of Mabalacat, Magalang and Porac will hold a 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. transport strike Thursday.
There are about 5,000 public utility jeepney drivers and operators in Angeles City and thousands more operating in nearby towns.
Reynaldo Gueco, spokesperson for Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (Piston), said the transport strike in the province is their response against rising oil prices and their way to push the Aquino administration to act on the alleged overpricing of oil products.
On December 2010, oil prices were at P36 per liter of diesel and P46.50 per liter of gasoline. Since March 22, the average per liter prices of diesel is P46.70 while gasoline is P53.90.
Oil companies increased their prices nine times just for the first quarter of this year.
Piston and other affected organizations and sectors believe that current oil prices are overpriced by P7.50 per liter.

‘Disastrous’
In a press briefing at the Angeles City Hall compound on Tuesday, Gueco said that for a jeepney driver who last year earned an average of P150 per day, the P10 per liter total cumulative increases in diesel price from January to March this year is “disastrous”.
“A common jeepney driver in Angeles City consumes a minimum of 10 liters of diesel daily or P467 every day for the three rounds that he can make in his route in a 10-hour period or shift,” Gueco said.
Gueco said with the P8 minimum fare, for every round of a passenger-full 20-seater jeepney, plus say, on a good day, 10 more replacement passengers that he picks up along the way in his round-trip route, is equal to P240 per trip or P720 for the full three trips.
When P467 worth of diesel consumed is subtracted from the P720 total earnings, a common jeepney driver’s earnings is at P253.
“After he pays the jeepney operator or owner the P250 minimum daily boundary, all that will be left for him and his family is P3. He would then need to extend his shift to another two to four hours or until such time that he is able to earn at least P100-P150, barely enough to buy food for himself and his family,” Gueco said.
Meanwhile, for a driver who owns the jeepney, he has to set aside a boundary of P250 for jeepney maintenance expenses, monthly Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) taxes, fines and penalties, among other operating expenses.
“This is why for every peso increase and overpricing in diesel price per liter, a precious peso is painfully taken away by the oil companies from whatever little earnings the driver gets,” Gueco said.
The nationwide strike also seeks to suspend the arbitrary tax hike being imposed by the BIR on public utility jeepneys in Central Luzon.
