Public Works agency to seek mayor’s help to cut trees

March 14, 2011

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — A Public Works official in Central Luzon said the agency will seek the help of Mayor Oscar Rodriguez for the removal of about 30 trees along the MacArthur Highway here.
Alfredo Tolentino, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) regional director, said he will ask the mayor to help them convince groups opposing the Manila North Road widening project to stop its opposition to the cutting of trees from Pilar village up to the St. Scholastica’s Academy.
He said the cutting of trees will pave the way for the road expansion project that will help ease traffic congestion. “This is the remaining stretch that experiences heavy traffic congestion especially during rush hours,” he said.
Among those opposing the tree cutting is the Save the Trees Coalition (STC), the same group that has opposed the cutting of thousands of trees in Bulacan, Pampanga and Tarlac. These areas are part of the P440 million road widening project of the DPWH.
Earlier, the DPWH central office permitted its regional office here to cut down 36 trees along the same road sections in Pampanga.
However, when the STC rallied against the tree cutting, Public Works Secretary Ronaldo Singson ordered the suspension of tree-cutting activities. The order was lifted in less than a week.
The STC has sought for a win-win solution on the tree cutting by suggesting to officials the establishment of a bicycle lane behind the trees and strict traffic rules implementation.
The group has argued that the widened parts of the MacArthur Highway in this city are only utilized as parking spaces of several vehicles.
Tolentino said their agency will place “no parking” signs in widened areas but will expect the local police to implement traffic regulations.
“In terms of having a bicycle lane, it needs to be continuous lane and not just a portion of the road. Otherwise, it can cause accidents especially when bicycles from the would-be bicycle lane would cross back to the main road,” Tolentino said.
The expansion of the MacArthur Highway is seen as a preparation for the influx of business investments and tourists that will come to the region.
