Pupils clean graves for living

STA. ANA — Several elementary pupils here who were off from schools for semestral break have been working in various cemeteries as painters of graves for and in consideration of P50.
The students said they have been doing this for several years while the country braces for All Souls’ Day celebration.
Janelle Nolasco, 13, a grade six pupil from Central Elementary School here, recalled that at first, their group was just playing inside St. Anne cemetery until they discovered the possibility of having extra income by helping others who clean the graves of their loved ones.
“Instead of just playing, we thought of earning even just a small amount by painting the graves,” said Nolasco in vernacular.
He also said that each of them gets P300 at the end of the day, and they expect more of it as the All Souls’ Day celebration gets closer.
“Nag-eenjoy na po kami, kumikita pa kami (We enjoy and, at the same time, we earn),” Dexter Clemente, 12, also an elementary pupil said.
The residents here have been busy cleaning grave sites.
Meanwhile, a woman who regularly cleans the grave of her parents told Sun.Star that the All Souls’ Day celebration is also a good time to tell the younger members of the family stories about deceased family member.
It can be observed that, All Souls’ Day is a Roman Catholic day of remembrance for friends and loved ones who have passed away.
This comes from the ancient Pagan Festival of the Dead, which celebrated the Pagan belief that the souls of the dead would return for a meal with the family.
Candles in the window would guide the souls back home, and another place was set at the table. Children would come through the village, asking for food to be offered symbolically to the dead, then donated to feed the hungry.
