Religious sect to hold province-wide ‘clean-up drive’

Sunday, January 16, 2011
CANDABA – More than 115 locales of the Iglesia Ni Cristo are set to launch a province-wide clean-up drive starting January 21 as part of the 87th founding anniversary of the Ecclesiastical District of Pampanga.

The week-long celebration will highlight a simultaneous Grand Evangelical Mission, distribution of Pasugo, (religious magazine) Christian music presentation in four separate venues such as Pineda Convention Center (Lubao), Bren Z. Guaio Convention Center (City of San Fernando), Xevera multi-purpose hall (Mabalacat) and the Glorietta covered court (Arayat).
It can be recalled that Brother Felix Manalo established the district of Pampanga in 1924, earning the distinction of being the oldest among the ecclesiastical districts of the Iglesia ni Cristo around the globe.

From as early as 1918, the Iglesia Ni Cristo first gained foothold in Pampanga. The brethren in this predominantly Catholic province had been undergoing various trials and tests of faith, facing religious persecutions from the townsfolk who were biased against the Church.

Others were threatened by insurgent rebel groups, such as the Hukblahap, or the Hukbo ng Bayan Laban sa mga Hapon.

Pampanga was among the provinces in Central Luzon severely affected by the Mt. Pinatubo eruption on June 12, 1991. Although the volcano is situated in Zambales, outside Pampanga’s border, the tons of ashes it spewed were enough to bury a great part of Pampanga’s territorial limits. Despite this, the brethren remained steadfast in their faith through the inspired leadership of the late Brother Erano G. Manalo, and now with the present Executive Minister Brother Eduardo V. Manalo.

With such an admirable display of faith and courage, the brethren-victims of the calamity in Pampanga have managed to carry on despite the odds, not only with their day-to-day living but also with their religious duties and obligations.

Responding to the circular issued in 1991, locales from various districts around the world sent relief contributions for their fellow Christians in Pampanga. The Executive Minister also conducted pastoral visits to Pampanga several times and officiated worship services times in certain locales.

Through its coordination with the Philippine government, the Church Administration also initiated the relocation of the displaced brethren.

Aside from the hundreds of families who were brought to the Church-owned Bagong Buhay Resettlement Community in Palayan City, Nueva Ecija, in 1992, thousands more were provided with housing units in various public resettlement sites within Pampanga and the neighboring provinces in the succeeding years.

The district of Pampanga has more than surpassed the age of calamity that lingered for some time. (Herbert P. Mapiles)
