Senate honors Cebu archbishop

CEBU CITY — For his work as a peacekeeper and his spiritual leadership, Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal is honored by the Senate barely a month before his retirement.

Senate Resolution 306, introduced by Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, states that Cardinal Vidal “helped the community avert or survive several crises and conflicts, often acting as a peacekeeper and giving the voice of moderation amid clashing views and interests in local and national issues.”

The Senate adopted the resolution last week.

Cardinal Vidal told reporters Sunday he did not know about the Senate’s gesture, but thanks them for recognizing his work in the Archdiocese for over 29 years.

“I am hoping the Lord will also compensate them for the great tasks that they have done for the country,” said Vidal.

The archbishop visited Barangay Guadalupe on Sunday to celebrate a Pontifical Mass for the annual fiesta celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

In his resolution, Senator Enrile said the cardinal has interceded in a wide range of challenges, including “military coups, labor disputes, evictions of squatters and vendors, clashes of political camps, and threats of injustices.”

The resolution further acknowledges that under Vidal’s able leadership, “he creatively tapped resources of the Archdiocese to help the poor and oppressed, thus living out the principle of stewardship not only among priests and bishops but also among parishioners and faithful followers of the Church.”

The Senate also commends the archbishop for his efforts in “protecting relics and artifacts of the faith, teaching bishops, priests and their flocks the value of preserving culture and religious traditions.”

Enrile says Cardinal Vidal’s achievements will encourage other spiritual leaders to “shepherd” their congregations to help them achieve their local communities’ development.

“Cardinal Vidal has ably represented the role of spiritual leaders in nation-building without compromising the principle of separation of Church and State, and without stoking the fire of intolerance and prejudice,” he said.

Aside from the recent Senate resolution, Vidal has also received numerous tributes from local government units in Cebu such as in Cebu City and Talisay City, both of which has declared the 79-year-old archbishop an “adopted son.”

Cardinal Vidal is scheduled to retire on January 13, 2011, about five years since he first applied for it.
