Senior citizens lobby for mandatory insurance
March 23, 2011
CANDABA — Senior citizens in this town are lobbying for possible additional insurance benefits not within the scope of “The Expanded Senior Citizens Welfare Act of 2010.”
Erling Embuscado, a senior citizen in Barangay San Agustin this town, said they have already done their respective shares, which have somehow contributed to the growth and development of the province.
“Galing po kami sa iba’t ibang sector — may magsasaka, propesyunal, negosyante at retiradong manggagawa. Iba-iba man po ang papel na aming ginampanan sa lipunan, alam naming nakatulong kami sa simpleng paraan upang lalung sumulong ang lalawigan,” he said.
Embuscado added that this is the right time for the Provincial Government to pay them back by allocating a small amount from the annual budget for the insurance premium of the senior citizens.
“Yung amin lang naman po ay pakiusap. Ang hinihingi namin ay kaunti lamang para mayroon kaming magamit sa kapag nagkakaroon kami ng sakit,” another senior citizen here lamented.
As this developed, Governor Lilia Pineda responded favorably to the proposal of the senior citizens. She said that the province, upon approval of the Provincial Board, will get a mandatory insurance for them.
However, Pineda clarified that the insurance beneficiaries will be identified according to the qualifications to be set determined by the Provincial Board.
Initially, the governor disclosed her plan to insure senior citizens ages 80 and above.
Republic Act No. 9994, also known as the “Expanded Senior Citizens Welfare Act of 2010,” was signed by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo last February 10, 2010 which provided new benefits for senior citizens.
