Solving waste problem a ‘tall order’

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Solving the massive garbage problem in the province is a “tall order” that cannot be realized overnight, said Provincial Environment and Natural Resources officer Art Punzalan.
Punzalan and some Provincial Board members just arrived from an observation trip in Cebu where he led the team in taking a look at one of the city’s model materials recovery facility.
“The problem of solid waste management cannot be solved overnight. It is a tall order that has to start at the grassroots level. The other dilemma here is how much we really are willing to spend to come out with viable solutions. In our case, we cannot sacrifice the delivery of basic services for something like P500,000 a year for garbage disposal,” he told Sun.Star Pampanga.
He said a clear-cut solid waste management plan must be properly and carefully executed in all local government units, starting with the province’s more than 500 barangays.
“We are studying now the possibility of creating transfer stations and clustering barangays [that] do not have areas for materials recovery facilities. We are also studying the offer of Kalangitan that our waste be picked up from here at the same cost of P800 per metric ton as relayed by Mabalacat councilor and Engr. Rox Peña. It has to be consolidated,” he said.
Punzalan lamented that the issue on solid waste management was allegedly not even on the agenda of the past administration — a reason that aggravated the current state of Pampanga’s garbage woes, the province having been pinpointed as the eighth garbage generator in the country.
“It’s going to be a long way for us but we believe that through the concerted efforts of everyone, we will be able to resolve this problem in the long run,” Punzalan said. (Jovi T. De Leon)
