State university celebrates 1st anniversary

Thursday, December 9, 2010

BACOLOR — The Don Honorio Ventura Technological State University (DHVTSU) will celebrate its first anniversary Thursday and honor its stakeholders and the people who made its conversion from trade school to state university possible.

DHVTSU president Enrique Baking told Sun.Star Pampanga that whole-day activities have been lined up by the University Student Council to celebrate the historic occasion.

Expected to attend the events are third district Representative Aurelio Gonzales Jr., Mayor Jomar Hizon, officials of the Commission on Higher Education and the DHVTSU community.

“We have lined up programs that would highlight the achievements of this school. Our students from the DHVTSU-Mexico Campus will also be attending the event that is meant to honor the people who have made the conversion of this school into a state university a reality,” Baking said.

The university students have been also tasked to set up booths and an anniversary program for Thursday’s anniversary celebration.

Baking said they will also honor Gonzales, who is credited as the “Father of the DHVTSU Bill,” for his foresight and dedication in lobbying for the conversion of the former trade school.

In June 2009, Gonzales committed his time and efforts to pursuing House Bill 6319, “An Act Converting DHVCAT into Don Honorio Ventura Technological State University.”

The bill was co-sponsored by Representatives Junie Cua, Exequiel Javier, Jesus Crispin Remulla, Marcelino Teodoro and Cynthia Villar.

The final version of the bill was sponsored by Senator Manuel Lapid and was co-sponsored by Senators Edgardo Angara, Miguel Zubiri, and Manuel Roxas II, who chairs the Senate committee on education.

The conversion of the DHVCAT (Don Honorio Ventura College of Arts and Trade) into DHVTSU officially took effect on December 9, 2009, when then-President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signed Republic Act 9832, making it Pampanga’s first and only state university.

Gonzales had also pioneered the DHVTSU plan to set up satellite campuses when he facilitated the re-opening of the campus in Barangay San Juan in Mexico town in 2008 after it had been closed due to lack in funding and low enrollment.

“It is just right that we give credit where it is due. The people of Bacolor will not forget the efforts of Congressman Gonzales,” Baking said. (Ian Ocampo Flora)
