Street kids and their desire to paint

February 21, 2011

ANGELES CITY — Like other children of her age, Jelly Abella, five, is as just playful and energetic.
But unlike ordinary children, she cannot play inside their house or at their neighbor’s. She is not even in school.
Instead, the busy streets of Angeles City became Abella’s playground, where she also sells camia flowers for P10.
One time, Abella fell from a jeepney while trying to offer camia garlands to passengers.
Despite the bandage on her left arm, Abella managed to attend the art classes at the Museo Ning Angeles (MIA).
“I want to learn how to draw and paint so I still attended the art classes,” Abella said.
The art lessons are conducted for free by Malu Gueco, a Kapampangan artist and a columnist of Sun.Star Pampanga, for Abella and 52 other children like her.
Gueco’s art lessons are her contributions to the Bale Anghel, a shelter for the city’s street children.
“When Abella came to class with a sling, it made me cry. Despite the pain in her left arm, she sketched with her right arm a beautiful art work using green, blue and golden colors,” Gueco said.

The other street children, Gueco said, painted using different colors, setting aside for a while their duties to sell garlands.
The paintings of the children were displayed during the exhibit “Kids Heart” at the city’s museum last week.
Each painting was sold at P500, so Bale Anghel could have more resources in creating programs for the children.
Bale Anghel was established by Joy Cruz, city museum director, in 2010.
“My vision is to give these children better lives, as simple as getting a birth certificate for some who has been rejected from public school because of that or letting others sleep on safer ground instead of a corner street,” Cruz said.
“We envision a place where they can have a decent meal and bath, learn about God and most importantly, have a hope for the future.”
Aside from Gueco and Cruz, Fernando Dungca has also become a guardian of the children. He takes care of them every day.
These three have volunteered their time to teach and take care of the street children.
During the opening of the “Kids Heart” exhibit on Thursday, some guests including Herminia Pamintuan, wife of Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan, pledged support to the shelter.
The city’s first lady said she has dreams of living in a city with no street children, assuring the group she will support the shelter’s activities.
Aside from Pamintuan, Kiwanis International governor Fred Cruz also pledged to include 53 children of the Bale Anghel to all of their medical, dental and check-up missions.
Other guests even bought some of the children’s paintings.
“Why don’t we make this city a city of Filipino Picassos by supporting their works?” Gueco said.
Several paintings are still available for sale. Interested parties can contact museum officers at 887-4703.(Charlene Cayabyab)
