Technology center to spearhead PH’s global competitiveness

Thursday, December 16, 2010

MABALACAT — The Technology Resource Center (TRC) is all set to spearhead the country’s drive towards global technological competitiveness and self-sufficiency in line with President Benigno Aquino III’s economic vision.

TRC is a government-owned and controlled corporation more popularly known for its role in disseminating a variety of livelihood technologies through hands-on training and the publication of its education booklets and VCDs.

During a press briefing here, TRC director general Dennis Cunanan said their agency is already collaborating with key agencies of government and the private sector to come up with Philippine-made train coaches, monorail system, power-generating windmills and industrial cranes – all using inexpensive, Philippine indigenous materials.

“Coming up with these projects would prime the economy while making the country more globally competitive,” Cunanan said.

Cunanan said their efforts were in accordance with TRC’s upgraded functions as spelled out by Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Mario Montejo.

Montejo earlier said the DOST is delving into innovative technology solutions to help boost the economy and solve pressing problems of the country as per the instruction of Aquino.

Among the innovative solutions that are being pursued by the DOST are manufacturing of an innovative “mosquito trap” to counter the dengue menace, produce a computer tablet to revolutionize the public education system, and develop a cost-effective “health sachet” to address the malnutrition problem.

To expedite such efforts, Montejo coursed these solutions through the TRC.

TRC is the prime mover for the success of pivotal projects such the Bio-n organic fertilizer, and the promotion of countryside industries through Techno-Centers, TRC’s industrial estate operations in Pampanga, Bataan, Tarlac and Zambales.

Aside from spearheading innovative solutions projects, the DOST has also tasked the TRC to build, manage and operate the highly successful Technology Business Incubator (TBI) in close coordination with other government agencies.

The facility, which is located in Quezon City, is the home of pre-screened young entrepreneurs who venture into open source technology-oriented businesses. To bolster their chances at success, the business “incubates” are provided with legal, accounting, marketing and other consultancy services.

Their business are periodically evaluated, coached and in time, are expected to graduate from the incubator strong and mature enough for the challenges of the outside business environment.

To further promote innovation and technology for business and other applications, TRC has also started hosting the annual Technology partnering Forum since last year.

The event showcases over a hundred successful entrepreneurial ventures, and gathers together enterprising citizens looking for business or technology partners, emerging trends and unique opportunities to innovate their existing enterprises.

It also includes a trade fair, technology symposium and youth business idea contest.
