Santenots is a premier cru climat of the Volnay appellation in the Cote de Beaune. It is something of an exception in Burgundy’s appellation laws, as it is in fact situated within the Meursault commune boundaries, just to the south of Volnay, and is covered by the appellations of both of these communes. Both red and white wines are produced from the vineyard, from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay respectively. The red-specific nature of the Volnay appellation, and the white wine-bias of the Meursault appellation means that the white wines are sold as Meursault, and the reds as Volnay. Volnay’s finest vineyards are located in a tight band of high quality terroir stretching right across the village, between its commune boundaries with Pommard in the north and Meursault in the south. As with almost all of the region’s most prized vineyards, these are located on the mid-slope of the Cote d’Or escarpment. Here they benefit from well drained, limestone-rich soils and a south-east facing aspect helping the vines to capitalize on the morning and early afternoon sunlight. Wines made under the Volnay Premier Cru title are made under the strictest production conditions of the Volnay communal appellation, exclusively from grapes grown in vineyards officially recognized as Premier Cru by the INAO, the French government organisation in charge of the country’s appellation system. |
