The Sport of Mountain Climbing

Mountain climbing, as we know, is a sport in which men and woman of all ages in good physical condition climb the slopes of hills and mountains on foot. There are three types of mountain climbing – the easiest, trail
climbing where participants merely hike along trails to the top of a particular mountain – rock climbing takes place on steeper slopes and larger mountains -ice climbing is generally required only on extremely high mountains whose peaks are above the timber line..

In Great Britain the craggy hills of Wales and Scotland are quite popular with mountaineers – the high peaks of the Alps attract climbers worldwide – the Andes in South America and the Himalayas in Asia – The Rockies in the US Western States and the Appalachians in East have many peaks that attract mountaineering fans.

The first great peak ascended in modern times was Mont Blanc in Switzerland, in 1786. Other Alpine peaks followed, capped by the ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. By the 1910s, most peaks of the Andes, the Alps, and the Rockies including Mount McKinley (1913). Beginning in the 1930s a series of successful ascents of mountains in the Himalayas occurred and were not reached until the 1950s; however, the best known is the 1953 ascent of Mount Everest by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.

Mountain climbing clubs and organizations have been established for enthusiasts interested in this sport.

Climbers wear heavy boots with cleated soles to prevent slipping on steep inclines or slippery patches on the route. Climbers wear dark sunglasses held tight about their eyes from the blinding snow, and insulated clothing to keep their bodies warm. Climbers wear special backpacks containing first aid and cooking equipment and a small quantity of special food; if the climb is to take more than one day they must carry pup tents or sleeping bags rolled on their backpacks. Climbers carry ice axes to cut footholds in the rock or ice; the ice axe is also used as walking sticks in difficult terrain…
