The summer of 2002 was not a good one for the prized Verdicchio.The rare storms of July and August battered the grapes to pieces as they ripened on the vine and virtually destroyed the year’s crop.
In contrast 2003 was a classic. Nevertheless, do look out for this wine region near the Misa Valley. Cupramontana is the recognized capital of the wine zone and is also home of the ‘Museum of Wine Labels’. The Verdicchio Wine festival takes place at the end of the summer. The two grand DOCs are the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and the full bodied Verdicchio di Matelica.
