Transport sector sees gloomy 2012

HE transport sector in Negros Occidental sees gloomy days for the year 2012.
Jessie Ortega, chairman of the United Negros Drivers and Operators Center, hit anew the fuel companies in the country for imposing the first round of price increase this year.
Pilipinas Shell increased the prices of its petroleum products effective Tuesday.
Prices for unleaded gas was up by 90 centavos per liter, regular gas by 60 centavos, diesel by 30 centavos, and kerosene by 20 centavos.
Officials said the increases reflected the movement of prices of oil in the international market.
Ortega said oil companies have been insensitive to the plight of the transport sector, particularly the drivers whose families will also be affected because of the domino effect of the increase in the prices of fuel.
He also hit Transportation and Communication Secretary Mar Roxas for his failure to attend to their plight.
The drivers cited the failure of the government to address the disparity in the prices of fuel in the province compared to other provinces especially in Metro Manila.
The disparity, according to the drivers, should only range from P1 to P1.50 per liter. Current local fuel prices are higher by P4 to P5 per liter compared to Metro Manila and other provinces.
Another concern they have been raising is the alleged shortchanging of the fuel stations in their pumping stations.
A team from the Department of Energy found out last year that the actual amount of fuel being sold to motorists is less than what is reflected in the pumps. To date, no charges have yet been filed against the erring fuel stations.
