Trillanes on GMA: No animosity, no apology
December 23, 2010
SEN. Antonio Trillanes IV would not apologize to anyone, not even to former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Arroyo whose administration he attempted to overthrow twice.
“Hindi!” Trillanes said when asked during the Senate media forum yesterday on whether he will issue any apology for leading coup attempts during the Arroyo administration.
Trillanes, a former Navy lieutenant, was one of the junior officers of the Magdalo group who led the takeover of the Oakwood Apartments in Makati City in July 2003. In November 2007, Trillanes, along with other military officers walked out of a Makati court and holed out at the Manila Peninsula Hotel for hours, calling for Arroyo’s resignation.
He was released Monday night after seven years in detention and turned over to the custody of the Senate. It was his first time to step foot at the Senate.
Trillanes said those demanding an apology from him, particularly Sen. Joker Arroyo, are entitled to their opinion.
He refused to admit guilt for participating in the coup attempts. “I believe I would refer that to my lawyer,” he said.
Trillanes said he was not ready yet to face Rep. Arroyo.
“As far as possible we should avoid that but in case that happens, civilized human being naman po tayo,” he said.
“It’s going to be awkward sa ngayon. I can’t imagine what I will do actually. Pag isipan ko muna,” he added.
He said he does not take his incarceration against Rep. Arroyo.
“What happened to me was a matter of fate. I needed to go through that and GMA was just used as an instrument to make that fate happen,” he said.
“So wala ho. Walang personal animosity,” he added.
Asked then if Rep. Arroyo should have anything to worry about regarding her safety now that he is out of jail, Trillanes said, “It’s not up to me. Her fate is not up to me.”
Trillanes said he is going to apply for amnesty.
In an earlier interview, Trillanes expressed his intention to run for reelection in 2013 to make up for the time lost in the Senate.
Trillanes, who backed Sen. Manny Villar in the May presidential election, also reiterated his full support for the Aquino administration, saying that everyone should now move on.
He defended his support for Villar, saying that he was bound by the decision of his colleagues in the Magdalo group.
“May dynamics po yung grupo namin before we arrived at that decision. In fact I did not vote myself but I was bound by the decision of the group…But that was as far as the campaign,” he said.
“But the people have spoken and we have to move on. We can’t go against the will of the people,” he further said.
Trillanes said he trusts the present administration and “until that trust is broken, it will remain.”
Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said he ordered Trillanes to be on time when the Senate resumes regular session on January 17. He will be seated beside Sen. Miriam Santiago.
“It’s good if Senator Trillanes will be punctual, if not more punctual than the rest of us,” Enrile said as Trillanes was paying a courtesy call.
Enrile has accepted the custody of Trillanes after the Makati Regional Court branch 148 judge Oscar Pimentel ordered his provisional liberty on recognizance of the Senate.
Enrile also assigned two members of the Office of the Senate Sergeant-of-Arms to implement Trillanes’ house arrest in lieu of the senator’s detention in Camp Crame. – With Jocelyn Montemayor
