Village chief cries harassment by cops

CANDABA – A top village official in this town on Wednesday cried foul over local police’s harassment of tiangge (market) vendors here.

Barangay Bahay Pare Chairman Arnold Camino said the police barricaded the entrance to the tiangge using a mobile patrol unit around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Camino said Mayor Jerry Pelayo allegedly ordered Chief Superintendent Wilson Santos IV to direct the town police to block the vendors because the tiangge is allegedly slowing down traffic flow in the area.

But Camino claimed that the police’s move is a “political harassment” because he is known as a staunch supporter of the opposition.

“I wasn’t even informed of the recent meeting of barangay chairmen. I would have discussed this issue with the mayor,” he said in vernacular.

It can be recalled that the Municipal Government transferred the tiangge to the newly constructed public market inside the Candaba East Plaza, a more than one-hectare municipal facility with complete water system and parking area.

Municipal chief of staff Leny Manalo said the transfer was aimed at avoiding road obstruction and traffic congestion along the Baliwag-Candaba national road.

However, vendors lamented on Wednesday that the transfer would spell bankruptcy for their business.

Vendor Levy Cruz stressed that a lot of vendors have lost their business upon their transfer to the new public market since not many people go there on account of inaccessibility. Cruz pointed out that going to the new market entails a tricycle ride, unlike in their present location, which makes it easy for those who shop before going to work.
“Dito talaga ang pwesto naming (This is our station),” she said, adding that she and her fellow vendors have been selling here for ten years and don’t want to relocate to the new place. (Herbert P. Mapiles/with reports from Chris Navarro)
