World wine consumption: down ten million hectolitres in two years according to the OIV (Apr 06, 2010)

Between 2007 and 2009, world wine consumption declined from 247 to 237 million hectolitres, and world trade contracted by 3 million hectolitres. In 2009 Europe saw a general decline in consumption: France –2.9%, Spain –11.6%, Italy –6.4%, England –6%, the Netherlands –8%, Belgium –5%. Consumption held up in the rest of the world, with the exception of Brazil (+6.5%). The share of the original 15 EU countries went from 49.5% of total wine consumption in 2005 to 46% in 2009.

On the wine production side, the 27 EU countries lost 180,000 hectares of vines between 2006 and 2009 (now totaling 3.7 million hectares), of which 113,000 in Spain, France and Italy combined. The countries most affected in percentage terms were Hungary (–10%) and Bulgaria (–20%). Between 2005 and 2009, the top five EU wine producing countries’ share declined from 58 to 53% of world production, while non EU countries remained stable at 26.4%.

However some of the latter suffered large declines in 2009: Argentina (-17%), Brazil (-20%), Australia (-7%),while others saw increases, such as the United States (7%) or Chile (14%), which nevertheless lost 1.25 million hectolitres in the recent earthquake. 2009 Worldwide production was stable, estimated at between 260 and 270 million hectolitres.

Getting to the Clark Wine Center wine shop from Manila is quite simple:  after entering Clark Freeport from Dau and Angeles City, proceed straight along the main highway M A Roxas. Clark Wine Center is the stand-along white building on the right, at the corner A Bonifacio Ave.  From the Clark International Airport DMIA, ask the taxi to drive towards the entrance of Clark going to Angeles City.  From Mimosa, just proceed towards the exit of Clark and this wine shop is on the opposite side of the main road M A Roxas.
